What Eurovision Logos Tell Us: Serbia 2008
Serbia,
which participated as an independent country for the first time in 2007, took
home the trophy in its debut year. The image above shows the opening page of
eurovision.tv in 2008. The website featured a dominant black theme, with white
stars greeting visitors on both the left and right sides. 2008 marked the end
of Eurovision.tv’s blue-themed era.
Highlights of 2008 Belgrade, Serbia
- The Eurovision Song Contest
adopted a two-semi-final system for the first time in history.
- The Grand Final took place on
May 24, just like the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956.
- Sweden qualified for the final
thanks to the jury votes.
- A record-breaking 43 countries
participated, including debuting nations San Marino and Azerbaijan.
- Austria withdrew from the
contest and did not return until 2011.
The Story Behind the Theme and Logo
Inspired by
the theme "The Place Where Music Meets," the Serbian team
designed the stage based on their country’s geographical location. The capital
city, Belgrade, is situated at the confluence of two major European rivers, the
Danube and the Sava. This unique feature served as the
inspiration for the stage design.
The stage
was not only a representation of Belgrade but also symbolized the unity of all
European nations gathering in one place. This concept extended to the slogan
and logo as well. "The Place Where Music Meets" was not just about
nations coming together—it was also about the fusion of their music, joy, and
energy on the Eurovision stage.
