North Macedonia Launches X Factor and The Idol Ahead of Eurovision Return

North Macedonia’s public broadcaster MRT is bringing two major international music talent formats back to its screens and their future winners could potentially become names to watch for Eurovision 2027.

North Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) has announced plans to launch both ‘X Factor’ and ‘Macedonian Idol’ as part of its new programming strategy.

The broadcaster first teased the projects on social media, announcing that ‘X Factor’ will be coming soon, with further details about the audition process to follow.

MRT also announced the upcoming return of ‘Macedonian Idol’, promising more information about the format in the near future.

Searching for Macedonia’s Next Stars

According to MRT’s First Programme editor Stojan Trpčevski, the broadcaster has secured three major international television formats, with two of them dedicated specifically to discovering musical talent.

‘Macedonian Idol’ will focus on finding new singers and new musical stories, while ‘X Factor’ will look beyond vocal ability, searching for performers with stage presence, charisma and the ability to connect with an audience.

The return of these formats marks a significant new focus on domestic music talent at MRT, which is also planning to transform MRT 3 into a music and entertainment channel.

Could Eurovision Be the Next Step?

MRT has already confirmed that North Macedonia will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, following a five year absence. The country last competed in Turin in 2022, with Andrea performing Circles.

MRT has not announced that either ‘X Factor’ or ‘Macedonian Idol’ will be their Eurovision selection mechanism. However, with the broadcaster actively searching for new singers and performers at the same time as preparing for its Eurovision comeback, the two shows could provide a new platform for artists who may eventually attract the broadcaster’s attention for Eurovision.

North Macedonia has previously used domestic music competitions as a way of discovering established and emerging artists. The country’s Eurovision history includes performers such as Tamara Todevska, Kaliopi, Elena Risteska and Martin Vučić, while its first Eurovision representative, Vlado Janevski, qualified through Skopje Fest.

Sign the Petition to Bring Hungary Back to Eurovision

A new petition in Hungary is calling for the country to return to the Eurovision Song Contest , more than seven years after its last participation. The petition, published on the Hungarian civic platform SzabadaHang , is addressed to Zoltán Tarr, Minister for Social Relations and Culture , as well as other decision-makers. It calls for the necessary steps to be taken to bring Hungary back to Eurovision and, if possible, send a Hungarian artist to the next available edition of the contest.
