Basel's Financial Proposal for Eurovision 2025 to be Discussed on September 11

 


Exciting developments for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025! Following the decision by SRG to host the event in Basel, the city is moving forward with preparations. On September 11, 2024, the Grand Council will review a financing proposal for a net expenditure of 34.9 million Swiss francs, ensuring Basel is ready to welcome Eurovision fans from all corners of the globe.

Economic Impact

A study by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) revealed that the 2024 contest in Malmö reached over 160 million TV viewers and attracted more than 80 million YouTube users worldwide. The advertising value of the event was estimated at a staggering 805 million euros, alongside several hundred million social media interactions.

The benefits extend beyond media exposure, with significant financial gains for host cities. A recent University of Liverpool study found that Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool generated an added value of 62 million Swiss francs across the hospitality, catering, and retail sectors. An influx of 500,000 visitors came to Liverpool, occupying 175,000 hotel rooms during the Eurovision period.
