New Details Revealed on Canada’s Eurovision 2027 Selection
Canada is preparing to make its historic Eurovision Song Contest debut in 2027, and new details about how the country will choose its first representative have emerged.
According to a report by The Globe and Mail, CBC/Radio-Canada will use an artist-focused internal selection process combined with public voting, rather than staging a traditional televised national final.
Public will have a say
CBC/Radio-Canada’s music and television teams will initially create a shortlist of potential artists. The broadcaster is particularly interested in performers with established careers and, ideally, an existing fanbase in Europe.
The shortlisted artists are expected to be revealed later this autumn. Canadians will then be able to vote for their preferred candidate online, with the public vote combined with the assessment of a professional music jury to determine the winner.
The format has been described as similar to the system used by Bulgaria, where public voting and a professional jury work together to select the representative.
The artist will come before the song
One of the most notable aspects of Canada's Eurovision plans is that the artist will be selected before the song.
Once chosen, the representative will be involved in developing their Eurovision entry, including participating in the songwriting process and selecting the creative director for their performance.
CBC/Radio-Canada has also confirmed that Canada's Eurovision song will feature both English and French, although the broadcaster does not require the selected artist to already be bilingual.
Why isn't Canada holding a national final?
Unlike countries such as Sweden, Finland or Spain, Canada will not have a traditional national final for its debut.
The main reason is time. CBC/Radio-Canada only became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union in June 2026, leaving the broadcaster just months to establish its Eurovision operation, select an artist and develop Canada's debut entry.
CBC/Radio-Canada reportedly consulted broadcasters including Australia, Switzerland, Finland, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium while developing its selection strategy.
bbno$ among possible candidates
The report also names Canadian rapper bbno$ as a potential candidate for the Eurovision project. However, no artist has been confirmed as Canada's first Eurovision representative at this stage.
Canada will compete at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Burgas, Bulgaria, marking the country's first-ever participation in the competition. CBC/Radio-Canada has already opened its search for Canadian artists, with applications running from 31 August to 9 September 2026.
Canada's debut is therefore shaping up to be a distinctly different Eurovision project: an established artist, selected with public involvement, followed by a collaborative song-development process designed specifically for the European audience.
