Broadcasters have until September 15 to register for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, while countries will have an additional month to withdraw without financial penalties. With several broadcasters still undecided, the final list of participants could remain uncertain until October.

The registration deadline for Eurovision 2027 is fast approaching. According to reports, broadcasters must register their participation by September 15, although they will have until mid-October to withdraw without facing a penalty.

Most participating countries are expected to confirm their plans in the coming weeks. However, uncertainty surrounding the 2027 contest could see some broadcasters wait until the final days before making a decision.

Five countries still undecided

The five countries that boycotted Eurovision 2026 have yet to officially confirm their plans for 2027.

The Netherlands is currently the most complicated case. AVROTROS announced its withdrawal from Eurovision 2027 last week, but another broadcaster within the Dutch public broadcasting system could potentially take over the country's participation.

There has also been interest from the private sector. Dutch media reports have suggested that Talpa, owned by media entrepreneur John de Mol, has already submitted a proposal to produce the Netherlands' Eurovision entry.

Iceland and Ireland are also yet to make their decisions. Icelandic broadcaster RÚV is expected to discuss its Eurovision plans internally, with the country reportedly appearing somewhat closer to a potential return than Ireland.

In Slovenia, the future of Eurovision participation could also be affected by changes at RTV Slovenija. The country's new government has announced plans to restructure the public broadcaster, potentially impacting its management and funding.

Spain has also not officially confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2027.

Spanish broadcaster RTVE has already approved its participation in Junior Eurovision 2026 and continues to be represented in the European Broadcasting Union's governing bodies. However, it has yet to announce whether Spain will compete in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest.

The European Broadcasting Union is reportedly trying to convince the five countries that boycotted Eurovision 2026 to return, potentially including reforms to the voting system.

However, the situation has become more complicated following AVROTROS' decision to withdraw from the 2027 contest. Spain could therefore face a difficult decision as it considers its own participation.

Canada and North Macedonia confirmed, Hungary watching

While several countries remain uncertain, Eurovision 2027 will already welcome some notable changes.

Canada will make its Eurovision debut, while North Macedonia is set to return to the contest.

Another country attracting attention is Hungary. The Hungarian government has repeatedly expressed interest in returning to Eurovision, although it remains unclear whether Hungary will be able to finalize its participation in time for the contest in Burgas.

Belgium's participation could also become an issue. Flemish broadcaster VRT, which has been increasingly critical of the EBU, could potentially be influenced by developments in neighboring Netherlands.

For now, no additional withdrawals are expected beyond those already announced. However, with the September 15 registration deadline approaching, Eurovision 2027 could see several important decisions made over the next few weeks.

The final picture may not become clear until October, when the withdrawal period ends.
